Gabe Newell tried to create a port but didnt follow through until. The music and sound were still on, the character would just bump into the wall and keep working, but the game wouldn't accept any input. Doom 2 was a carbon copy of Doom 1 and released in 1994. In some cases the game would freeze after a while, but it kept working. However, after I used Compaq's own MODE tool to change CPU speed from default "high" to "auto", I got another result. Used Norton Commander to clear read-only status from all Doom 2 files. Also tried disabling internal cache, but it didn't help, just made the game extremely slow. Quake doesn't have an easily nameable quality. Easy to get right (despite Carmack getting it wrong with 3.)
